Why My Pastor Opposed Video for My Song with Burna Boy – Singer Waje Reveals

Published

on

Aituaje Iruobe, known professionally as Waje, made her debut with the studio album W.A.J.E in 2013, which features her most provocative track to date, Grind.

Her collaboration with artist Damini Ogulu, widely recognized as Burna Boy, on the song Grind has garnered significant appreciation; however, it lacks a corresponding music video.

In a recent interview, Waje revealed that her pastor was against the idea of producing a music video for her collaboration with Burna Boy.

She explained that her spiritual mentor elaborated on various elements of the song, which she personally acknowledged, leading her to decide against creating a video.

Waje, whose daughter recently completed her university education, emphasized that as a Christian, she adheres to certain principles and refrains from engaging with sensual music. She articulated her perspective as follows:

“2013 was one of the most pivotal years in my career, marked by numerous significant developments. However, there were many songs I chose not to pursue due to my faith.

Do you understand? The collaboration with Burna Boy, titled ‘Grind,’ did not result in a video. At the time my album was released, I had a discussion with my spiritual leader, Pastor Tony, who clarified his reasons to me. My understanding is that there are three categories.

The first is the gospel category, where artists uplift churchgoers. These are gospel musicians reaching out to their congregations.

Next is the conscious category, which includes individuals who are also believers but create love songs, recognizing that even as Christians, one does not express wedding vows in archaic language. Instead, one articulates genuine emotions for their beloved.

I identify with this category, alongside artists like Johnny Drille and Timi Dakolo. Our mission extends beyond just Christians; we aim to provide clean music for anyone seeking it. Lastly, there exists the sensual category.
