Onyeka Onwenu, also known as the “Elegant Stallion,” was born on 31 January 1952 and passed away on 30 July 2024. She was a multi-talented Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former judge on the X Factor series.

Additionally, she served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was appointed as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013.

Hailing from Arondizuogu, a prominent town in Ideato North, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, Onwenu was raised in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, Nigeria.

She was the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu, who tragically passed away in an autocrash a week before his appointment as Minister for Education when she was just four years old.

Education Onwenu holds a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York.

She served as a tour guide for the United Nations before coming back to Nigeria in 1980 to fulfill her one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) obligation with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos, Nigeria.

She was appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former governor Ikedi Ohakim. On 16 September 2013, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appointed her as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

Activism
In 2000, Onwenu protested against her former employer NTA over their refusal to pay royalties on her songs. After then-director general Ben Murray-Bruce blacklisted her from transmission, she embarked on a hunger strike outside the station’s premises.

Onwenu’s advocacy garnered significant backing from numerous artists, including Charly Boy, who criticized Nigeria’s failure to compensate for royalties when songs are aired on television and radio. The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) committed to resolving the matter amicably but denied any claims of preventing Onwenu from appearing on their networks.

The protest concluded after six days when Onwenu and NTA reached an agreement concerning royalties.

Personal life
Onwenu was known for maintaining a private personal life and frequently declined to share details about her ex-husband, who was a Yoruba Muslim. She was the mother of two children, Tijani Charles and Abraham.

Death
On July 30, 2024, Onwenu collapsed after performing at a friend’s birthday celebration in Lagos. She was promptly transported to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
